Fitting a Rear Anti-Roll Bar/Swaybar to the MR-4BC (Page 1 of 2)

A rear anti-roll bar can be a useful tuning aid on smooth and grippy surfaces. Think of it as a “sideways spring” - it affects the car’s weight transfer from side-to-side (i.e. in corners), without affecting it’s weight transfer front-to-rear (i.e. under acceleration and braking). The anti-roll bar can be used to take a little cornering grip out of the end of the car the bar is fitted to (rather like using a stiffer spring) - the rear anti-roll bar also tends to take away a little traction on corner exit, and the cars bump handling will deteriorate. On grippy, smooth surfaces, the anti-roll bar tends to make the car feel “smoother”. However, all this is theoretical - you’ve got to try the bar to see if it works for you.

Parts Needed

ZS-412R MR-4TC Rear Anti-Roll Bar kit
ZS-019 Shock Tower Spacer (if you haven’t fitted the long wheelbase conversion)
4 M3x18mm or 20mm Flat Head screws (Yokomo part number ZC-F318 or 320 - but any screw will do)

Step 1

The MR-4BC’s rear shock tower has protrusions around the holes that it bolts on through, to locate the tower, and maybe slightly stiffen the mounting. Instead of filing them away, I chose to open out the holes in the 6mm shock tower spacer that you need to mount the anti-roll bar through, to get a nice fit. Make sure you open out the holes on the side opposite the slot for the anti-roll bar - that slot needs to face the front of the car. I used a 4mm drill, to just go down about 1mm into the holes through the spacer - however, using a hand-drill, this ended up slightly less tidy than I had hoped - I’d suggest trying a pillar drill, or using a reamer.
