Experimental Shock Tower Braces for the MR-4BC (Page 1 of 2)

While practicing on a rather bruising indoor track, I managed to break the front shock tower on the car after a bad landing from a jump. Looking at the moulding, it occurred to me that the upper part of the tower, between the shocks, was noticeably thinner than the two vertical sections. I know from others that the front tower is fragile (why do they rarely design these cars with four mounting screws at the front?). So I’m experimenting with some braces (Warning: It’s possible that these parts will over-strengthen the top of the tower, and cause more breakages elsewhere).

How To Make The Braces

I made the braces, for both front and rear, out of 0.060” (approx 1.5mm) aluminium. The holes drilled are all of a 3mm diameter. The braces were then hand-finished with a file, to stop them fouling the original BC towers (which are moulded with angles and other screw holes in them). Below are two diagrams, with dimensions (the dimensions are quite accurate, however it’s hard to be perfect without access to Yokomo’s files).
